Reader Qn: Serviced apartment in West Bay

Marriot Renaissance Doha
“Hi there,

I am relocating to Doha next month from Washington DC and my main concern is finding a place to live.  My new gig puts me up in a hotel for 2 weeks, but then I am going to have to find something.  I am looking for something small and convenient to West Bay (office is on the Corniche).  I’ve emailed a few serviced residences in the hotels, and they are of course extremely expensive.  The other issue is that I dont want to front a year’s worth of rent at lease signing.  Sadly it seems like a lot of places in Doha still practice that silly policy.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
Reader”

Hi Reader,

Thanks for your email.

I don’t live in West Bay but I know a lot of people who do.

Firstly, I should say that it is very unlikely that you will find a place that doesn’t demand a year’s worth of signed checks before you sign a lease.

Second, you probably won’t be able to sign a lease until you have your Residency Permit which for me took 6 weeks but may take less time for you.

I did have a friend who lived at the Marriott Renaissance and enjoyed that. I also know someone who stayed in the Kempinski but I’m not sure if that was expensive or not.

Another option is The Pearl which has studio apartments (if you’re looking to save money this is a good option). But I believe that if the traffic is bad, it can take 30 minutes to get from The Pearl to West Bay.

Another short-term option is Garvey’s. Although it’s not in West Bay (it’s off Salwa Road, near Ain Khalid roundabout) it offers cheap accommodation which you can pay for month by month. It’s not glamorous, but it’s practical!

Good luck with your move and house hunt,
